transmission slips then works fine after i crank it back up, what could be the problem?

2002 toyota camry. been a great car has 209000 miles. last week it seemed 2nd or 3rd gear was going out. next time it was driven it seemed fine then all gears went. pulled over and waited for a sec then cranked it up and drove for awhile with car running perfect then it went again. I'm stumped ???

You might want to check the tranny fluid. Engine running in neutral. Pull the dipstick. Feel and smell the fluid on the end of the stick. Does it look dark brown? Does it smell bad/burnt? Put some fluid between your fingers. Does it feel sandy...or...slippery? Is the fluid at the proper level?
