Loud humming noise only when idling - 2001 Camry

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This is happening when it's in gear or in park. The minute I accelerate, it stops. Background: I changed the alternator a couple of months ago and I did experience some intermittent "squealing" for a while upon turning over the engine, but only if the A/C was on.  If I turn on the A/C when I'm at idle it doesn't seem to get better. or worse, but does make a kind of "hiccup," noise and then the humming seems to be a little different pitch. The humming seems to be coming from somewhere around the crankshaft pulley area... but, I'm not sure.

Check all of your belts and make sure they are all tight. The humming noise may be coming from one of your cooling fans. Is the humming happening as soon as you start the car? Or do you notice it after engine is hot and you are at a light? If you are only hearing it after engine is hot and not upon first start up, I would pay attention to the cooling fans.

Thank you, very helpful and correct as it turns out! I thought I heard it coming from around the PS pulley but my directional hearing is not accurate. Someone else looked/listened and saw a chunk out of the P/S belt. The pulley was a bit loose as well making it wobble a bit. I saw that the last time I changed the alternator but was not in a place I could access with the tools available. Problem solved Thank you!
