My check engine light is on - why?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Check engine light came on.  I disconnected the ground from the battery and it reset, but came back on after about 120 miles or so.  I heard rumour there was a recall for this problem - any truth to that?

First you will have to have the codes read to tell why the engine light is on. There are about 150 different reasons it could be coming on, and disconnecting the battery will only mask the problem and make it harder for a technician to read the codes, since you are resetting the computer memory and readiness monitors by doing that. Have the problem diagnosed by your Toyota dealer and then have them check open recalls on your vehicle to see if the problem you are having is covered by a recall.
