why is the gear-shift on my 1998 camry LE stiff to move? Is this a serious problem?

This is a fairly common problem on all types of cars. It could be a number of problems. Things to check to remedy the problem would tbe the shift cable adjustment, the shift pivot points, or it could just be cleaning or having the bushings replaced.
