Camry 1993 braking lights up the "Reverse" indicator on dash (auto transmission)

Asked by Guru9XK2 Mar 19, 2017 at 06:49 PM about the 1993 Toyota Camry XLE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently, my 1993 Camry with 4 cyl and auto transmission started showing the reverse gear indicator lighting up when I step on the brakes.  The other gear indicator lights continue to correctly show what gear the car is really in  Right when that problem started, the dash lights started showing "tail light out" warning light, and ABS warning light.  Upon inspection, ALL tail lights function.  The brake fluid is OK.  Car runs well.

Go to the rear of the vehicle. Have someone turn on all the lights...operate the directionals...Brake lights etc. Go to front of vehicle...again...operate all lights including directional and brake lights. Do all exterior lights function as they should? Next...open the trunk and find the wiring harness near the left...driver side..hinge. inspect that harness and gently wiggle and tug. Do all the lights still work? How about that false indicator for reverse gear?
