Car won't turn over, just had a new starter installed

Asked by Ahartq Nov 11, 2016 at 08:26 PM about the 2000 Toyota Avalon XLS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

For a few weeks, my car was having trouble turning
over. Would click and dash lights would come on,
but wouldn't start. After a few tries it usually
started. Two days ago, it sounded rough starting
and a few miles down the road, I smelled
something frying and smoke started coming out.
Took it in, cable to starter from battery was fried
and starter was out. Both were replaced yesterday,
today it is back to where it all began, not turning
over. What else could it possibly be? Alternator?

Have the battery tested for starters and test the alternator output. Did you clean and tighten both battery cables? I would also check the ground strap to make sure it is OK.

Also check and see if the bolts from the starter to the cables are tight. It sounds to me like your starter was staying engaged as the engine was running and it burned the starter motor up.

Check the ignition switch relay
