I can not get my 1998 Toyota 4RUNNER TO PASS A SMOG TEST WHAT CAN I DO TO GET IT TO PASS?

I always try to change oil and air filter before taking in for test, if I have any worry about failing.

Is the ck engine light on so it wont pass? IF YES, Try disconnecting the battery, & connect back & the ck engine light will be off-- then immediately drive it on highway for like 20miles constant & if light still off go straight to get smog & see if it passes. Did this with My 96 4runner a couple occasions & it worked!
