my friend owns a suzuki  side kick 1998 manual and the shifter isnt going into second  
gear.when turned off you can go through gears.what repairs would be needed to fix

Sounds like the slave cylinder is not fully disengaging the clutch. Watch the slave cylinder shaft. It should be fully extending. Check clutch fluid level.
