I have a 2006 Malibu-The check engine light came on-have taken it to 2 different dealers and they can not clear it. It's due for inspection but we can't keep the light off & they can't find out what's
The check engine light came on-couldn't get it to clear off. Took it too have the codes cleared, they couldn't do it. After several tries it will just go off but then it comes back on again. Hours have been put into trying to find a code or something but nothing will register. The car runs great but is due for inspection. Any ideas?
What are the codes?
I will have to get them. I did put a new battery in as they thought it may have been the battery and then also replaced 2 O2 sensors
Also the last time the code was able to be cleared the car wouldn't start with the machine hooked to it so they unhooked it and started the car up and the check engine light was off. I drove it for 28 miles and it came back on
Those are both lean codes for both banks. Go to: http://troubleshootmyvehicle.com/gm/4.3L-5.0L-5.7L/how-to-test- a-lean-condition-1 Try an independent shop, they tend to spend more time with diagnostics, might be low fuel pressure or it may just be slow O2 sensors, and that can be seen by using a live data scanner. Most dealer Tech are only interested in getting it in and out as quickly as possible cause they are only paid on flat rate, and the book only gives a Tech approximately 3/10th's of a flat rate hour to diagnosis a system, and that is not long enough too run a live data scan properly.
I had it at an independent shop and he's spent hours trying to figure it out w no luck. He suggested for me to take it to a dealer but you're saying that they won't be able to run the correct test is that right? So what or where do I go from here?
We did replace 2 O2 sensors is there more than 2?
They can but at dealership labor prices it is going to be expensive. I guess your independent guy either didn't have the right equipment or knowledge to find the trouble.
Oh I gotcha! Understandable, thank you very much for your help! I hate to junk the car but I can't afford putting a lot of money into it if I can't get it to pass inspection
I don't know where you are, but in the few places that have testing in my state if you how that you have had it in for work and they could not get the light out and it passes the tail pipe sniffer they stamp it passed and ignore the light.
I'm in NYS That would be great if they would do that and then i can just continue trying to figure the problem out as money comes available
