how do I tow it behind my motorhome?

Asked by JF33898 Jun 18, 2013 at 07:03 PM about the 2006 Chevrolet HHR LT FWD

Question type: General

I have a roadmaster hitch set-up for the car.  I need to know what to do in order not to ruin the transmission.  I'm told put in neutral and remove a fuze.  What fuze and where do I find them?

I would strongly recommend NOT towing the Chevy the way you planned...Instead, ante up a little cash and do it the safe way and keep all 4 wheels elevated and off the ground with a tow dolly, like the one pictured here that U-Haul rents: http://www.uhaul.com/Reservations/EquipmentDetail.aspx?model=AT

neither budget ,penske, uhaul have dolly to tow HHR with. Just wanted to tow one across country & wound up driving it. Will mess up tie rods definitedly if towed, and radiator if loaded down the road with a puncture hole..

Have towed 2002 tracker 4x4 auto, 40,000 miles, no problem. Transfer case in neutral, transmission in park.

Not trying to debate the issue, just telling of my own experience.

Automatic transmission HHR is flat towable, read your owner manual

If it is towable it is at low speeds for short distances.

Pull the #8 fuse from the fuse block located on the right side of the console, in the passenger well. This allows you to leave the key in the run position and not have battery power to all the accessories. Don't be alarmed, though, that the car will still start and that the radio will still play. This will only last for 10 minutes or until you open the door. The car is working on retained memory.

We flat towed our 08 HHR With automatic transmission for 4 years behind our motorhome. Just don’t go over 65 mph and pull the number 8 fuse so the battery doesn’t go dead. Put the shifter in neutral and turn the key to accessory. (It won’t go to lock) never had any problems with the tranny. The manual states not to go over 65 mph. Nobody at GM or tranny shops could tell me why.
