Head gasket

Asked by Truckeeverdi Sep 24, 2016 at 10:05 AM about the 2003 Subaru Outback Limited Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

On my 2003 subaru legacy out back I'm putting a
used 2.5 engine I got from a subaru dismantler. It
has 101,000 miles on it. Should I go ahead and
change head gaskets on replacement engine
before I install it? I know Subarus have issues with
head gaskets going bad.  GD

I would change them. It is much easier with the engine out of the car and you likely will not have any service or maintenance information on the used engine.

Truckeeverdi- you should be fine IF you have this done by a professional mechanic who is an expert on Subaru's and look into using the new multi layered gaskets. There's a couple of places that discuss this, here's one, but, sources are abundant. https://allwheeldriveauto.com/six-star-subaru-head-gasket-kits/
