Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Subaru bros. I need some advice regarding a 96 Subaru Outback. 320,000 miles. I think the timing belt is out. I don't want to junk the car but is it worth changing? HELP.

You say the timing belt is out, so that all depends on if that motor is a interference engine and if the valves are not bent.

612Stoner- First, congratulations on 320,000 miles! That's a great achievement. The great news for you is that the 1996 Subaru Outback is a NON interference engine. The 1996 2.2L is not interference. HOWEVER, it does have solid lifters that need to be adjusted. That changed in 1997, so, you're LUCKY. Yes, it only requires a new timing belt. See this, http://www.scoobyenthusiast.com/subaru-faq/which-subaru- engines-are-interference-what-subaru-engines-are-non-interference/ The best advice I can give you is, yes, put in the new timing belt and drive the car, maybe you can go to 500,000 miles.. http://www.subaruhighmileageclub.com/miles500000.html
