my 2003 legacy theirs a slight tickin noise when idling but when you get going it stops or atleast i cant hear

my 2002 legacy makes a ticking noise when idling or taking off then i dont hear it a
subaru guy told me it was a subaru thing i drove three more an they all did the same thing
i was just curious or if he was full of it  im sure you guys can help me out im a first time
subaru driver but i already love them the oil is fine up too par where it should be just
changed it

yeah, pretty much. my 04 is noticeable and my 03 isn't but it is typical. I've not checked the valve clearance (adjustable tappets?) on the 04, though. If you read about it on the forums, it's very much expected. Especially when it's cold!!

The injectors happily tick away at idle. If louder maybe just light valve noise. If quite loud but disappears upon FULL warmup (up to 20 min driving) then it's piston slap, a somewhat annoying trait of horizontally opposed motors with short (for fuel eco) piston skirts.

If REALLY loud...especially when revving quickly, then rod bearings from either past over-revving and/or oil starvation.
