99 Legacy

Asked by MFR Nov 10, 2010 at 07:26 AM about the 1999 Subaru Legacy L Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The engine in my 99 Legacy is toast.  I am thinking of replacing with a used salvage yard one.  How do I know for sure which motor it is?  The block has a casting number of EJ22.  Subaru dealer says from the VIN number that is not the correct motor.  How do I really know from the motor.  I would like it to bolt right in with no modification.

the dealer is wrong, subaru still put the EJ22 in all the 99 Legacy" L" models I do emphasize L model, the 2.5 GT had an EJ25, depending on if the car is auto or manual you may just wanna go with the EJ25 anyway, it a slightly better engine overall but it also costs a bit more.

Will the EJ25 bolt up to my bell housing? What will the computer think? It is an automatic tranny.

it should bolt up the same but you would need a new computer for the transmission, that's part of why a 2.5L swap costs more.
