1998 - 1999 Legacy engine vs Legacy Outback engine of same years

Hello!

Was wondering if the legacy engines from 1998 - 1999 are the same engines used in
the Legacy Outback for the same years? Or if there are any modifications for the
heavier Outback? Basically want to know if I can put a Legacy engine in a Legacy
Outback! Been working on a 1998 legacy outback DOHC 2.5 liter

Also, will an engine from an automatic transmission bodied legacy work with a manual
transmission bodied legacy?

There is better research for this on legacyforums or NASIOC. But the gist of this will be phase 1 DOHC vs phase 2 SOHC. So it seems you have phase 1 DOHC and you'll need the engine to be DOHC and have the same sensors setup and wiring to be the same for it to be a direct bolt in. Otherwise, I would assume any DOHC long block for those couple of years would work, even among foresters and imprezas, etc. Google phase 1 subaru dohc and you'll see what I mean. I'm not sure if the trans matters as much.. I have two auto foresters and I can't think of where the starter is on a manual. And obvious changes with a TC verses clutch pack. HTH and best regards,
