Chevy colbalt makes a grinding noise when I press the brakes

Probably rotors too. If they are scored or chewed up from metal on metal replace them when you do the pads. They are very inexpensive. Just stick with the stock ones. They are more than adequate on an LT. The drilled and grooved ones are less reliable and are really just gimmicky ways to get you to spend extra money. Also be sure to check out the calipers to make sure they are functioning perfectly. They are prone to seizing up, especially the rear ones. They will cut your brake life in half if they are not releasing properly and they are not all that expensive or difficult to replace either.
