Subaru Legacy 1992 needs new head gaskets, worth it?

I recently purchased a 1992 Subaru Legacy Wagon from a friend for about $600. I never drove the car more than 100 miles in a day. It runs beautifully, but I recently took a trip to Denver (mountains and 300+ miles) and the car started overheating as soon as I made it to the city. We tried replacing fluids, and eventually had to get it towed when we couldn't even make it a mile without it heating up to much. I towed it and took it to the dealership and got a new radiator for $300. However, they now inform me that the head gaskets need to be completely replaced ($1300). The engine is in decent shape, and I do believe I may can make it another 100K miles if I get the gaskets replaced, but I am sure you understand why I am nervous about this deal. I do not believe I could get a better car for $1300, and I love this little beater, but is this too much of a gamble? The body damage on the car is horrible, but it drives really well, and Ive never enjoyed driving a car more.

I have something you can try but no promises but it worked for me when my vehicle was over heating add some Bars Radiator and Head Gasket Stop Leak to the cooling system. Like I said no promises but it is worth a try. The only thing is do not continue to add more if it does not work hoping it will work that is when you can clog up the cooling system.

It's your money, I wouldn't do it, but if you like the car get the head gaskets replaced. Don't be surprised when the bill goes up if the mechanic finds other issues.

The car is worth about $1,000.00, so if you like it like Fire Bird said, that's your call.

I donno ... that's a tough call. I think that based on me being out of town with all my stuff that I would get it repaired ($1300 is a little high). No doubt the mountains took their toll and it may be wise to confirm the cooling fan on the engine is good ... turn the air off when climbing and be gentle on the gas ... you may just be OK
