I have a 1992 legecy that will only start if you bypass ignition to start car after trying to jump battery. Is the starter or ignition bad?

Charged battery car started then
when shut it off at gas station, the car
was dead. Jump battery but car would
only start by bypassing ignition.

Have you figured this out yet? When you tried to turn it on, did it "click" one time at all?
