alternator wiring to vehicle harness

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Can someone please tell me the order in which the cable colors are placed at the alternator connector? There is a single thick red cable at one end of the connector and then 3 more thinner wires that appear to be brown, black and grey but the colors are deteriorated. A previous owner cut the stock connector to install a different alternator but I now need to reinstall the stock alternator and connector with proper wiring to the vehicle harness. Thanks in advance. Juan

The previous owner probably had a problem with the original wiring in the car and installed what is called a "self exciting" alternator just using the big red wire. IF this is the case then if you hook up the original set up it may not work. That being said the wiring configuration is in the picture below. I can probably help figure out the issue if the alternator does not work after you install the origianl setup. The plug in on the back of the alternator should have letters for the wire. Red wire is "S" - should be hot and come from a fusable link / Brown wire is is "L" and feeds the charge light in the driver instrumentation center. If you ground this wire and the instrument cluster fuse (5amp)is good will illuminate the light. The last wire may also be Brown or Pink/Black and is termisnal "F". This goes to a Volt gauge if you have one. Basically this is a self exciting alternator also so it is imoportant for the "S" wire to be hot for it to operate properly. Good Luck

Thanks so very much Mike. The description you have provided and the wiring diagram should be more than enough for me to rewire the new stock alternator correctly. Again, many thanks. Juan
