Not sure what to do. on a tight budget. but need the repair to be safe, as i have a child, and won't take any risks.
How hard would replacing the gas tank be? Or is there an easy way to safely patch it?

If you need a quick fix, get some quik steel, it's about 10 bucks and will last a month or two till you can get a new one, or liquid steel both can be found at napa or auto zone
