Had the same problem. Mine was to do with the ERG valve sensor. There is 2 ways of stopping this replace the valve or get them to by-pass the sensor. Best is to replace.

Here is a pic of the ERG valve. Basically the sensors get clogged up with carbon deposits and then give high emission readings.

Can this be cleaned at home or does it need a shop repair? If so what is needed to clean it, and if not how much does this run to replace the part?

Think you got to know what you doing to clean it, would suggest shop repair. To replace the part is about $400 rough convertion from SA Rand. you can also go to www.subaruforester.org. The guys there are very knowledgeable and helpful.

Bruce thanks for all the help and advice. I had the code read and turns out the gas cap was in need of replacement. It was not sealing properly and as such the cruise was not working. I always seem to over think things.

Unplug the negative battery cable for a minute. Plug back in. This may clear it.

I have a 2002 Forester with a manual transmission on the clutch pedal there is a safety switch and then there is a pin with a spring and a plastic bushing with a c-clip, it is just like a bump stop but I ordered and changed the spring and my cruise control is now working great again, I do need to change the bulb on the cruise control switch but it works with a bad bulb.

With 2005 Forester same problem. Thought it happened when on Cruise. Did the disconnect battery thing to reset computer. Did not engage Cruise C, but After 20 min. Cruise light flashing and CEL steady. Also the Automatic Xmission lurches atabout shifting in 3 rd gear. I too think it is sensors. What is the least expensivefix?
