Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Can I put the engine block from an 02 manual
Forester on an 01 manual Forester? I'm hoping it's
just the head gaskets but I wanna know if it's
possible. I am NOT givong up my Subaru!

If they are from the same engine. If your head gaskets are bad you don't need to replace the block unless there is damage to the mating surfaces.

I think 99-04 swap interchangeably but that's 2.5 sohc.. 98? and 04 -?? XT were DOHC. Just verify that your car is/is not EGR. If yours is, you'll need an EGR engine. Ex: my 03 is NOT EGR and my 04 is EGR. Both XS, both silver, almost completely identical. But like FOR said, just have the head gaskets done. It's like 1500-2500ish, generally. Or do it yourself. Tons of research available. My thing would be, even if you source that engine, you ought to have the HG's replaced before swapping it or you'll be in the same boat later on. Good for you keeping your foz :D
