I got an oil change today and was shown that the timing belt is dripping oil. Replacement is $550.00. I was also shown that oil was trapped in the right rear cylinder 228.00 to fix. Expensive?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

They told me that the timing belt should have been replaced at 90,000 miles and the car is not safe to drive. I am not working, just moved to a new town and don't know who to trust. Is this price high? Am I just being frightened into paying Midas more money?

I wouldn't go to Midas either way, they're always overpriced and their work is pretty shoddy.

I wouldn't trust them since any work to show that is far from necessary when performing a simple oil change. Timing belts in newer vehicles such as that are good for far more than 90,000, replacement is usually closer to 150,000. Find an independent shop, they tend to be the most honest and do the best work.

Anyway, it is normal for some oil to be present on the timing belt because it is driven by the crankshaft and runs the camshaft and there are no seals between the front main and camshaft bearings and the timing set.
