SqueakING and vibrating in acceleration

My cat today started making a
squeaking and squealing noise with
a very audible loud violent vibrating
noise while accelerating. Where I
live it's 25 mph speed limit as it's a
beach town. It also would drop to
500 rpm and start vibrating and
squeaking as well.

Most likely it came apart inside, I had a Oldsmobile that one day it started making weird noises, and when you would hit it with your hand after it cooled down you could hear something thumping around, I just repalced it with a good aftermarket one and all was fine afterwards.

Since my mechanic is up the highway a bit, would it still be safe to take on the highway to the mechanic?
