Radiator fan doesn't work when engine heats up

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Two days ago a squirrel tore into the wiring loom directly off of the fuse box near the firewall(passenger side). I spliced all wires back together, however am still seeing an overheating issue. Both 30amp fuses marked "Fan" in the under-hood fuse panel are good. Not 100% sure on the two fan relays in same fuse panel, HOWEVER, the radiator fan's DO work when the interior AC or heat are turned on. Also, the temp gauge in dash works, and shows a steady rise in temp, so I'm assuming from that that the temp sending unit is reporting actual temp to the ECU. Is there possibly a secondary temp sending unit elsewhere that triggers the radiator fans to turn on?

does this car have the 3.8l engine? I have been down the same road before, but just not with a squirrel. However. I think you might be dealing with a faulty thermostat. How many miles are on the car?

Run two wires from the fan wires into your fusebox. Find a fuse port, possibly an empty that only gets power when the key is in the "on" position. The fan will run whenever you drive. Its not ideal, but i know it"ll work. Good luck!

It'll work...or catch your car on fire. Just always wear a fireproof thermal suit like those hollywood stuntmen used to wear and you'll be fine!

Problems like this can be easily troubleshooter and or fixed by jumping the set of relays that control fan hi lo functions and cross checking with a test light. No reason to run "2 wires" when you can just use the factory wiring that it was created for. Jump power at the relays and cross check from there. If in fact you do need to hardwire the fans to key on just use the switched power leg of the relay port and like magic. Poof the fans turn on and off with the key. .
