First of all, if its a console mounted floor shifter, try pushing straight down on the shifter and then try operating it. Mine does the same thing sometimes and when I push down on it I can feel it move back into its proper position and then it works fine. Something is loose or worn in there, and one of these days I might even try to figure out what it is. If you're parked on a hill that could also be the problem. There's a lot of pressure on the park pin in the transmission and it sometimes takes an extra hard pull to free it. With the car running, try rotating the steering wheel back and forth while you attempt to get it out of park. This will create a slight rocking motion which might help. And, of course, don't forget to keep you foot on the brake while you do all this.
