04 grand prix gt--How do I Know....

Asked by Lisaomg Aug 28, 2016 at 08:06 PM about the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT1

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car is going crazy.  Won"t  start, auto parts
store runs test, replace alternator...car still won't
start....takes a jump-after forever--runs like a
champ then.....till my car is telling me no a/c to
prevent engine damage---and, sure enough, right
there is a gauge telling me that my car is  HOT!!
Since my "heater" only works in the summer, I
changed the thermostat hoping to fix both--didn't
work for cooling problem, get back to ya on the
heating--so how do I KNOW if the water pump
needs replacing?  Elbow connect on passenger
side leaking--but there's a lot of water....I am
rooooo broke to play this game--can anybody help
me??  I found out about those elbow hoses on
here!!!  Thanks!!

Get the leaks fixed. If it is the water pump, they usually leak out of a weep hole just underneath the pump shaft and bearing.

The elbows must be replaced first. The good new is they are only about 5 bucks and not difficult to replace. Then the cooling system has to be full with no air trapped inside. I'm sure your problem is not enough coolant due to the leaking elbows. Do not run the engine for more than a minute or two until this problem is fixed or you will ruin the engine if you haven't already. It is highly unlikely that the problem is the water pump.

Have you checked your fans to see if they come on when you crank your car if they don't come on when you crank your car then that's why your car is overheating try to turn on your air conditioner and see if the fans come on then if they do you have a bad circuit in your motherboard in your car you need to straight wire your fans so they come on when you crank your car you need to replace your elbows if they're leaking they're like $2 and some change at a parts store and if you need a no something else call me 803 357 8056 my name's will I had the same problems too and that's how I fix my problem but I still had to replace my water pump on top of it cuz it burned it up
