Back Up lights not working

My Backup lights on my Pontiac Grand Prix GT 2003 are not working. Fuses are fine, as
are the bulbs. The trunk release does work. What could be causing this? I've had
problems with electrical at the shifter, could this be involved again? Thanks! I do have a
voltmeter but I'm not sure where to start.

Yes, there is likely a switch to engage the back up lights. It can be mounted to the shifter. Mine is accessible from inside the car by removing the shifter cover. It will have a small wiring harness attached. You can test the switch with the voltmeter. I think you would check for continuity when the switch button is depressed. Also, you may want to clean the contact points on the light sockets with a burnishing tool.
If it is a manual transmission car the switch controlling the back-up lights might be mounted on the trans case. Simple to change but may be hard to locate.
