I think I need a new alternator

Asked by Herb May 15, 2017 at 11:55 PM about the 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Heard a rattling sound from near what I think is the alternator. When I stopped
to check. Car would not initially start back up. But after a couple of tries
restarted. When it did my power steering was out and the dash showed the
battery light on and temperature gauge ran up to the hot red range. I was
able to get to my apartment and park. Any idea what the problem is.

+1 on the tensioner, makes sure to get another belt too. Probably all glazed up more so than a crispy creme donut.

Yup, check the belt. Also check all the pulleys that the belt runs on (A/c compressor, idlers, tensioner, power steering ect). Serpentine belts don't just come off, there is a reason it tossed the belt.
