Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix started puttering out of the
blue today. I just fixed the exhaust a few days ago. I went
to drive it to the store with a little less than a quarter tank
and by time I got down the road not even a mile the engine
completely stopped running and the gauge was on E. I was
able to make it back home after had to restart the car 3
times. I went to the store using a friends vehicle and got
two gallons of gas to put in the Pontiac I started it up an
the gas gauge was at a quarter tank. Then I went to start
the car to check it out and it backfired and the gauge was
back at almost empty and the engine still puttered
sounding like a lawnmower and shaking and wont stay
started. What could the actually cause of this be?

I would start by scanning it for trouble codes and checking the fuel pressure. Could be a failing fuel pump, although they usually just quit when they go. Could be a bunch of other things too though which is why the scan is a good idea.
