Why does my car say check gages?

Asked by William Nov 05, 2017 at 07:57 PM about the 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix 2 Dr GTP Supercharged Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Grand Prix gtp 1998.  So this morning I turn the car
on. Lights and dash come on. I turn to start it.
Power goes off like a bad battery.  A second later
lights come back on.  And I turn the ignition and
this time the car starts right up. Idk if it’s the
alternator because last week i replaced a bad
terminal screw cause it kept disconnecting from the
battery. While doing this I tested the alternator by
having the car run and unplugging the battery. It still
ran.  So it’s night now. And on the HUD display it
says check Gages I have about a half tank of gas.
My
Oils index is at 35%. What should I do.

never un plug electricals when the car is running , a multi tester is used to check batts. and alts. If the alt is bad a batt. light will come up on the dash . Make sure those batt. terminals are clean and tight . scan for codes

When your car is running, it is running off of the power from the alternator, not the battery, so disconnecting the battery will tell you nothing about your problem. Do as "beatupchevy" says and have the error codes checked. Most shops/stores will do this for free.
