1997 Grand prix is overheating

at highway speeds the engine temperature is normal, but when in stop & go
traffic the car is overheating.

Sounds like the cooling fan is not turning on, could be a thermal switch, fan relay or the fan motor itself.

Have you checked the coolant level to make sure it's full?
