96 grand prix losing power

Asked by Sep 26, 2017 at 10:21 PM about the 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix 4 Dr SE Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 96 grand prix 3.1, I'm having some issues
with this car. To start the car makes an awful
whining noise and a slight knocking noise. I was
told to change the power steering, I did that, and to
change the oil and add in an additive, did that, still
having the same problems. In addition to the noise,
the car starts but shakes, not when it's idle or being
accelerated, when I put it in gear it shakes a lot and
then dies down when I accelerate. It gets up to
about 30mph before it seems to lose power, if I let
off the gas and then accelerate again it'll gain
speed a little more, but less than a quarter of a
mile down the road the car loses power
completely. Let it sit a few mins and it'll start but
won't even make it a quarter of a mile before it dies
again. I have no idea what's going on. Please help.
