Perform the needed service or repair. It will take care of it on its own.

But how do I know what needs to be serviced? All my headlights, etc are ok. What else could make my service vehicle light come on?

Any of your car's systems - engine management, pollution system, fuel system, cooling system, etc. A failure will be detected by your car's computer and remember the cause. By having the car diagnosed by a parts store or service shop they will interpret the code that is stored and be able to fix the problem with minimal troubleshooting.
