A/C doesn't turn off, when switch is off

I have a 2001 Grand Am SE and it seems that the A/C is on all the time, even though
the light for the switch is off. The switch seems to work, since the light goes off, but I still
get cold air from the vents, which is fine for the summer. But when the light is off, the
A/C shouldn't be running.

What could the problem be, and how do I solve it?

Put the temp switch on a high temp the compressor should kick off if it stays on unplug the compressor til you get it checked out

I would say the on and off switch is bad even though the light is working so to keep it from working until you have a chance to check it out you have to do like Michele said unplug the compressor at the compressor and also turning the temperature up like Michele will also turn off A/C if you have temperature control.
