2000 Grand Am Se1 all windows just stopped working
My 2000 grand am se1 was working perfectly up until 3 days ago. My wife drove it to the park which is a 10 minute drive from our house. She had all the windows down while driving there. When she got to the park and tried to put the windows up none of them would work. I checked the fuses and there was 1 that was bad which I replaced. But still, none of the windows go up or down. Does anyone know what else I should check to get this fixed? Any help is appreciated.
May want to remove switch panel from door panel and check the connections going to switches making sure connection is tight and also you can check with a test light to see if power is going to switches.
firebird338, thank you for the quick response, much appreciated. I did take the switch panel apart and put it back and still no cigar. But I will check to see if there is any power coming to the switches. Is there any particular wire color I should be checking for the power test or would any wire do? Thank you, Mike
Check the fuse again that you replaced to make sure that it did not blow again. If it did you have a short somewhere. As far as the wires go companies use different color wires for power so they are not always red so just hook test light to ground and start touching wires to switch one will light up if power is present if fuse is good or keeps blowing and know power to switch you will have to chase the power wire down from window switch to fuse box. Not an easy job but it has to be done. Make sure test light is working on a known good source before testing switch.
Also if you still have the window switches out from door panel try to wiggle and giggle the wires going to switch while holding one of the window buttons to go up position. Maybe just a loose connection to switch.
Thank you very much. I will try that and report back with my finds. Thank you again.
I went and got a power tester and tested all of the fuses. All fuses under the hood and in the driver side fuse panel are working good when I have the key switch set to the on position. But the fuse panel on the passenger side are not lighting up at all when I test them with the tester? It's like there is no power coming to that side which is very strange. I did do a fuse test using the tester that comes with the fuse package and the fuses seem to be ok. But there doesn't seem like there is any power going there when I test it with the new power tester? I also tested the power in the arm switch but there doesn't seem to be any power coming to the window connectors. Only the lock and mirrors seem to have power but not the windows. What could be causing the entire fuse panel on the passenger side not to have any power? Thank you, Mike
So still no windows work from drivers side switches or the switches at the doors right ?
You are going to have to trace the wires that goes through the door to the inside of the vehicle to fuse box. Check the wires going through the door first making sure the opening and closing of the door did not cut any wires.
Yes, that's correct. None of the window switches on any door work. Only the power lock is working on all doors. For power windows there is nothing.
Wait a minute first you said all the windows where not working but now just the passenger side window is not working ?
I already checked those wires. They are covered by a black rubber hose which is protecting the wires between the door and the body of the car. I didn't see anything wrong with the wires when I checked them the last time. The problem is I don't even know what color is the power wire going to the window up/down switch. It would make it a bit easier to trace if I knew which one it was. I will try and see if I can trace it. If not, then I will have to take it in to a mechanic to get it fixed. Not sure what else I can do. I appreciate all your help with this. Thank you.
Sorry, none of the window up/down switches are working on any of the 4 doors on the car. Only the lock switch is working.
Sorry can not tell you what the problem is less from being there and looking at it myself but there is a way to raise the windows if they need to be raised. You said you have power going to the lock button right. Test light for power wire going to lock switch when you find it run a jump wire from that wire to window switch that you went to go up click window button window should go up. I know it does not solve your problem but at least you can roll your windows up.
After much tinkering around this weekend I found the power wire for the windows. It's a brown/gray type of color. I traced the wire down to the inside of the car and found out that someone had connected this wire to a direct line coming from the ignition switch with a 25A fuse between the 2 wires. Basically it was a hack job. Not sure why they did this but there must have been a problem with the main line to the fuse box and this was the only way to get the windows to work. The 25A fuse that was between these 2 wires was burned out so I had to change it. After replacing the 25A fuse with a new one everything is working again. What a mission this was. Thank you very much firebird338 for all your help. I really appreciate it. Not sure if this will help anyone else but just in case you run into this issue the wire you are looking for is the brown/gray looking one that's coming from the drive side switch panel.
Glad I could help. So someone tapped into the the power wire for the windows to run power somewhere else.
Thanks for the update now I know the color of the power wire for the windows for that vehicle.
Hi firebird338, Yes that's correct. Basically someone chopped the wire for the power when it got inside the car and pulled a new wire to the ignition switch. Once the ignition switch is in the On position the windows got power. But between the wire going to the window switch and the wire going to the ignition switch they put a 25A fuse. I guess they did that to protect the window motors. Not sure why they did this but there must have been an issue with the fuse panel for the windows and this was their way of getting around the issue. Now I know where to look if it happens again. Cheers.
