Change 3.4 engine

Asked by KS28_GT Oct 25, 2014 at 05:28 PM about the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Wondering how long it takes, and do you have to drop the A-frame to change a 3.4 engine on a 2000 Grand Am GT Ram Air? It's had a Low Coolant problem for a long time. Replaced with a new reservoir & cap, twice. It's now smoking and knocking. I'm thinking about selling it, but I really like the car and its in great condition otherwise. Exterior & Interior! So I can manage some mechanics, but have never dealt with engine replacements on these types of cars.

have you checked the intake manifold or head gaskets? i know that wasn't a huge problem on the GT's as it was on the Grand ams but i would check that also

also after you do all that then u should do a complete flush of your coolant system and spray the engine for the smoke could be coming from the old stuff. sorry i couldn't think of the mechanical terms. also don't rely on the temperature gauge inside the car cause when i had the issue it kept saying low coolant but temp and everything looked alright. the coolant was going through my exhaust and through the engine into my oil. check your oil level also if that is high then its intake manifold or head gasket for sure.
