99 Pontiac Grand Am Dies after start unless gas is applied

Asked by jdavis9690 Jul 21, 2016 at 12:08 PM about the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am 2 Dr SE Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently my car started having a little trouble starting. I would turn it over
and it would start but then die imediatly after unless i applied the gas. once i
did it would keep running without applying the gas. but it has become
constant it will not start and stay running unless the gas is applied while
starting. I'm not much of a mechanic and wondering if there was something i
could do without taking it to a shop.

Clean the throttle body, MAF sensor (using MAF cleaner only), clean the idle air control valve or replace it. A bad EGR valve may be opening at idle/low RPM.

Also check and replace air filter if necessary and add some fuel injector cleaner to gas tank.
