My 1996 Pontiac Grand AM goes into park when I attempt to engage reverse

My 1996 Pontiac Grand AM goes into park when I attempt to engage reverse it gets stuck in park and I have to rock the car and wiggle the selector to disengage I leave the car in neutral with the park break on when I park it
Is there an adjustment that can be done to correct this problem?
