my 96 grand am is not going into gear it will after a long pause i have to keep goingthru the gears to get it to go in drive or reverse

my 89 was hesitating a long time from reverse to drive before it would engage, my transmission guy suggested an additive, i forget the name but it worked. ask at auto parts store.
