stop trying you will break it, there are 2 sensors, one in the brake petal which will stop working, and on in the shifter they are both common. the brake petal switch, is a stop switch, preventing the car from being engaged in a gear before a driver is ready, preventing accidents...check that one first...let me know, it is a small wire up where the brake petal meets the pivot near the wall....

On a side note there is almost always a spot on these on the center console. Its a rectangle plug about the size of a 500mg ibuprofen pill. Its there in case the battery is removed or dead and the vehicle needs to be moved. You remove the plug and depress a small button with a key or screw driver to mechanically release the safety switch to move the shifter from park.

add to Johns side note, Do not leave plug disconnected it will prevent brake lights from going out and will kill battery, it is a temporary disconnect only.
