Car loses power while driving. This is an on & off problem

Asked by Michelle Dec 19, 2016 at 02:38 PM about the 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 4 Dr S Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi, our 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme loses power while driving. This
does NOT happen all of the time. We had a diagnostic done & they said the
ignition coil was bad. All were replaced after a tune up was done. Problem
still exists. New battery, coils, spark plugs, fuel pump & filter. New fuel tank
& filler neck. This car is a mystery! I'm wondering if a relay could be bad?
We are lost, can you help?
Thanks so much!

A plugged catalytic converter will cause power loss under certain conditions. Have it checked out and remove it or replace it if necessary.

Thank you. Master Muffler did check that and said it was fine. We have had a diagnostic done at another mechanic and they said the coil pack was bad for cylinder #1 #3 so my fiance replaced ALL of them after doing a tune up. The gas tank, filler neck, fuel pump, fuel filter, gas cap etc. have all been replaced, yet the problem still continues. We are lost! The car runs fine sometimes and most times it will chug like it's choking. It will have power, run great then lose power. Usually once we get on the freeway, with no stops, it is fine. Stop & go is very hard on the car. 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with low miles. Any other ideas? Please help! Thanks, Michelle

I wish I had more ideas for you, but I don't. I'm guessing something electronic, but that's only a guess. Sometimes it tough finding a technician who is really good at diagnosing, especially on older cars. Ask around, maybe try some of the forums that specialize in Oldsmobiles. There's probably advice out there but it may take some searching to find an actual expert who can sort this out for you. I find there's usually someone out there somewhere having the same problem.

Thank you for all the help. This is a difficult situation and even more difficult to find someone who can actually diagnose the car correctly. There a shooting range nearby. I'm thinking it may be our last resort. LOL

anyone check the throttle position sensor? do that first. my 89 cutlass with the 3.1 V6 had burned out fuel injectors, this caused the engine computer to go crazy. if you can, use an OHM meter to check resistance, should be around 12, 6 or lower is probably a bad injector. I bought replacements on E-bay for 75.- good luck.
