The fuel and temperature gauges worked occasionally, but now have quit completely. What are the possible causes and solutions?

that would be in the fuse circuit to the dash or the gauge cluster in dash disconnect, what happens when bumping the dash over cluster, sometimes this will show a loose connection

you could have a loose ground wire under the dash.

The fuses are ok. Have not yet had the gauge cluster checked due to expense. However, as the weather turned colder, both the fuel and temp gauges started working again about 90% of the time. I haven't observed any times when vibrations would have affected the gauges, as you might expect with a loose connection. Still a mystery to me.

If you take out the instrument panel you'll see the screws wchich connects the fuel/temp gages to the printboard they are the cause of bad conduction. You can extra tighten them or take them carefully out , clean the contacts and tighten them again. Then your problem should b solved
