My car will start but will not go into gear

1998 Mitsubishi Montero engine
change the transmission work
previously when installed the new
engine now wont go into gear

I'm no genius but I'm into ford ...well its on YouTube the guy hade to change out some 5amp fussed it was a surcuity deal...

Someone else put the tranny in ? Is the shifter loose as a goose ? Could be the cable wasn't tightened properly at either end .
