Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I purchased a user 2003 mitsubishi eclipse
spyder V6 convertable. The service engine
light is on. I already paid DMV $476 for  fees
becuz the tags were 1 1/2 years behind. I
need to get it smogged. I took my car to a
shop. They connected a hand held code
reader. They said i need a sensor replaced.
The charge will be $317. They will also fix
my broken wiper hose for free. Will this
solve the service engine light problem? Will
my car pass smog? They said they can
smog it too. I don't wanna fix one thing only
to be told it still won't pass smog. Can
someone give me sum inout? Thanks Liz

Impossible, there are a lot of sensors, Do you trust your shop, are they certified? Please note not all good mechanics are certified. You can make payments on a new car or pay repair bills on a used one.

Thanks Mike. I got a secound reading. I took my car to AutoZone and O' Rileys. They connected a code reader. They both said i needed a Bank 1 (02) downstream oxygen sensor. I've did sum price comparisons. I can buy the part and have it put in. I talked with a mechanic. He will do it off site for $50 labor. It has low miles 130,000. I thought it would be a nice investment car. If everything thing goes right and it pass smog. I will only be out about $1,475-$1,500 for my car purchase and repairs ,tags and smog total. The Kelly blue book is $5,000+. I've already had offers to buy it from me. I want it for a weekend car. Thanks for ur reply. Liz

The downstream 02 sensors are there for the catalyst monitor system. It tells the engine control the condition of the catalytic converter ! In your case I would bet you have a cat going bad and not a bad sensor so whoever installs the sensor ask if they're willing to take it back if it doesn't work, just a note your cats have platinum in them so they're a bit spendy, the aftermarket has universal cats for cheap compared to the Nine Hundred bucks for factory. I've been wrong before and I lie on occasion, I'm serious about being able to return the sensor. I hope this helps you
