Shift Lever Stuck in Park

Other people have answered this. Happened to me twice. Broken wire going to the stoplight switch under the collumn. bad switch would to it also. The switch is cheap and easy to replace, the wires are too stiff and break off. If the wire's broken, just crimp a new spade terminal on it, with a length of flexable wire added.

Thank you, Trippmeister. We successfully fixed the issue by: 1. Installing a new "brake light actuator switch" which is at the "union" of the brake peddle and the master cylinder 2. Installing a new 15A fuse in the appropriate location (it appears that the switch going bad also blew the fuse) Total cost: $10 (and an aching back getting under there!).

Yep, aching back :) Mine broke right after going to Esalen in Big Sur with my Wife. No tow trucks down there, but it broke in my garage the next day. Good Ol' Mercury.

If you've got brake lights, it must not be the brake switch, strange, because that's what it usually is, or a broken wire going to it. I guest it would have to be some shift interlock solonoid, not sure where it is, must be in column. I'd still look at those wires going to the brake light switch.

I have same issue. A pin and some kind of small block of medal the pin seems to go in fell out into floor. First time it happened was the switch. This is second time and obviously more serious this time.

Would this also cause the instrument panel to short a little

I have a similar issue with an early 90's Mercury Grand Marquis, I got my shifter stuck in drive shortly after starting the car and now it's unable to go back in any other position,

I have a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis Ls. It won’t crank or start and the gear shift is stuck in park. I changed the battery terminals charged the battery completely, bought a new alternator an replaced the starter. Still no crank. And the gear shift is stuck in park. All the lights come on brake lights dashboard radio. Can someone give me some advice please?

do your stop lights come on? Could be a broken wire, or bad stop light switch above the brake pedal. That's the shifting thing, not starting, that's another problem.
