how do I know what too check can someone give me a general idea were to look

You DID NOT stop at the first click, but proceeded to "TOP IT OFF"...well this fills up the carbon canister....the evaporative emissions systems no longer has control turning on the check engine light....drive for a month...never filling more than the first click and your problem will go away~

if you did invest in a fourteen dollar OBD-II handheld scanner, it'd show the trouble code for evaporative emissions charcoal canister fault~
