1999 Grand Marquis LS Starting problem

I have a 1999 Grand Marquis LS. Problem is that when I go to start, I turn the
key and nothing happens, unless I either turn the key all the way to back or
pull the gear shift up and to the left. Even then it takes a few tries to start.

Either the neutral safety switch needs adjustment or it needs to be replaced. It is down on the transmission linkage.
