What causes chirping at start up

Asked by Grandma47 Aug 10, 2016 at 03:01 PM about the 2005 Lincoln Town Car Signature L

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I noticed a chirping from under the hood when I first start my car.  I do not notice it if the car has been driven a bit, parked and then started again even an hour later

Serpentine belt, idler pulleys and belt tensioner should all be inspected, Standard procedure is to change them out at 80,000 miles.

Last time I had a noticeable chirping it was from the cam position sensor assembly. That was in a Ford CV with 4.6L. If your serpentine belt and pulleys check out ok then take a look at the cam sensor assembly. They're noted for chirping noises in Fords and Lincolns.

Pull the serpentine belt off and start it to see if the noise goes away. Don't run it without the belt for more than a minute or so. I am betting it is the belt tensioner or an idler, but could be something else.
