My service engine light is on and I here puttering from the tail pipe what could cause the problem

First get the code read. You can get it read by a mechanic or possibly at an auto parts store. You can also buy a code reader for under a hundred dollars. That said I suspect you might have coil going bad but get the codes read and post the results here and we will try and help.
